Wheels for July 15
by Julie Ontiveros

Are YOU smarter than a homing pigeon? John Somerville, local sport pigeon enthusiast shared some interesting facts on these athletes of the sky. Homing pigeons have been used as far back as ancient Greece and in the US since the mid-1800's, and served a great purpose in WWI, WWII and the Korean War. John gave the club some fascinating facts about the specially bred birds including that they can fly at speeds of 40 to 60 mph, racing 80 to 600 miles, often in unknown terrain. They can fly over 12 hours at a time and are believed to use both the sun and magnetic fields to find their way. They can also detect earthquakes and electrical storms with their super hearing. Thanks, John, for this informative lesson.

We appreciate Past Club President Karen Hicks and Past District Governor Michael Graves for hosting our latest Rotary Hold-up visitors, Doug and Debbie Dray from Warren, OH. They had a really good time, complete with Mother Nature contributing some lightning and rain. They knew of our own Bob Dunstan, former mayor of Warren. Small, wonderful world! Though they could not attend the meeting, other guests included Leo Kern, guest of the Club, Mateo Ontiveros, guest of Julie Ontiveros and Tom Miller, guest of Toby Yows. Visiting Rotarians were Dale Elliott and John Boyce II.

Mark your calendars: District Governor Cesar Caro will visit our club on Oct. 14.

Toby Yows tried for the drawing and got close with the Ace of Diamonds, while David Walvoord got the IOU for the Edes beef jerky.

Thanks and appreciation to:

Doyle Moore, song leader.

Gay Chalfant, pianist.

David Ellis, July program chair

Doyle Moore, invocation.

Bill Summerhill, introducing guests and visiting Rotarians.

Johnny Crowley and Jeff Neely, greeters.

Cal Harriman, selling tickets. Also, Mollie Barney did a great job pinch-hitting for Gina.
